HAICTA Tutorial on Open Data

Dr. Christopher Brewster
Senior Scientist
Data Science Dept.
This tutorial will give a whistle-stop tour of the open data for agriculture and food space. We will consider briefly the history of the idea “open data” and how this has spread to the agrifood domain. The differences between open data, linked open data and FAIR data will be described. We will consider open data in the areas of agricultural research, in farming, and in the supply/value chain. In each case, examples of data sets, standards and tools will be provided. Open data is a foundation of data science and provides a wide range of opportunities in the agrifood domain both for socially and environmentally beneficial services as well as economic opportunities for businesses. The digitisation of agriculture including especially the widespread availability of remote sensing data provides extensive opportunities for technically challenging research and innovation. Finally we will discuss the contradictions between the needs of the agrifood sector to fulfil the needs of farmers, food producers, consumers and regulators when we view data both as infrastructure and as personal and private. More details including a reading list will be provided closer to the date of the conference.

About the speaker
Christopher Brewster is a Senior Scientist at TNO specializing in semantics and interoperability. He is currently scientific co-ordinator for the Dutch public-private funded Techruption Blockchain project, and Project Leader of the “Blockchain in agrifood” project funded by Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. He has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sheffield on the topic of automated ontology learning from texts, and was previous Senior Lecturer at Aston University. His research background was Natural Language processing and Semantic Technologies, with a focus on knowledge representation for a variety of application areas including the biomedical and life science domains. More recently he has focussed on the agrifood domain with a particular interest in the application of Semantic Technologies to the food supply chain and logistics. He has published over 60 papers in conferences and journals, and organised many workshops. Further details http://www.cbrewster.com
